“The auditory hallucinations started at a very young age, maybe around 4. I heard dark voices, men’s voices, very low—in some type of language that I didn’t understand,” says Allie Burke, a Psychology Today blogger who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. “They sounded like any other noise. For schizophrenics, there’s no differentiation between what’s real and what’s not.”
